Will you raid old bosses again given a new “leveling down” system?

By Jess Mitchel

I won’t even deny it because it’s so true: I’m a completist pig.

I like racking up achievements, dinging levels, and collecting epic loot. I’m just wired that way and it’s got me all sorts of fun with my trusty Paladin.

Things like meeting friends on Frost emblem runs or defending all five Arathi Basin nodes in one match.

Of course, I’ve had to sacrifice some stuff along the way. Skip a few boring reunions here and there, cut down on Friday night clubbing, and stay away from boob tube replays. Voila! I have my raiding hours right there. I’d probably get fewer sleep if I could but no self-respecting tank allows himself to get groggy.

Point is, there’s so much to do in World of Warcraft but so little hours for doing them.

Ghostcrawler even plans to make my to-do list even longer than ever if and when he gets to implement a new “leveling down” system. In an interview with The Escapist, he explains this addictive option that may go live in Cataclysm:

Long-term, we’re trying to work on a system where you can actually go back and forward a little bit. You might be able to scale your character down levels in order to go play with a friend, and even redo quests that you’ve done before.

Part of the reason we’re able to do that is because of the technology we originally developed for heirloom items, which are items that scale. And then for the Cataclysm expansion, we’ve changed spells, so they also scale with level. So instead of having ranks now, your fireball will just get more powerful as you gain levels.

So since you can scale both class spells and items really easily, now we think we can actually let you lower your level down if you want to play with somebody else.

Goodbye imba-fun runs. Hello progression Zul’Gurub all over again.

Seriously, if this “leveling down” option goes online, we’ll have a mass exodus of level 85 toons queuing up for classic and Burning Crusade raids. I know A LOT of end-gamers who haven’t tasted what it’s like to slog through Blackwing Lair at the appropriate level; they just jumped right through to Outland.

It won’t matter if these old dungeons won’t offer WoW Gold or competitive gear. The achievement, glory, and bragging rights are all that matters. And this piggy will be first in line to test this feature out. Will you join me, dudes?
